Some of the shit Canada pulls with indigenous people.

If you’re new, here’s a few examples:

• byzantine legislation withholding agency from indigenous communites
• a failure to live up to obligations outlined in treaties, legal framework or in international proclamations such as the Declaration of Human Rights
• legal and financial pressure in the form of (but certainly not limited to):

1. claim disputes which have often escalated into open conflict.
2. the requirement that all communities operating under the auspices of the Indian Act to report and declare all financial transactions to the Department of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development.
3. Imposition of third party managers who undermine and destabilize democratically elected members of the community, while failing to address the problems they were purportedly sent to solve.

• Reserves the right to arbitrarily assign tribal and indigenous identity according to it’s own rules.
• The imposition of governments more amenable to Federal and corporate interests.
